I'm really struggling with the fact that Rylee is no longer a good sleeper. She never was "perfect", but she did sleep through the night 2 times before & she's slept better than she does now. The past month or so has been a little rough.
She's been going to bed around 8pm by being rocked & swaddled. I've been wanting to get rid of the swaddle for a while now since she rolls all over the place, but she just wouldn't calm down so we did the one arm thing out. Jeremy would rock her to sleep because as soon as you did she was pretty much out, but that had to stop sometime, right?
So, no more rocking her to sleep & no more swaddle. This is hard! Last night was pretty easy. She ate broccoli & sweet potato, bath, nursing & then story time. Then I laid her in the crib & she rolled over & pretty much went to sleep about 10 minutes later. I was thinking "this is going to be a good night." Yep, too good to be true. She woke up 2 times before 12:30am, but I was able to put her paci in her mouth & she passed back out. Then at 3:30 she woke up again, tried the paci & she wasn't having it, so I nursed her. She went back to sleep 30 minutes later. That totally beats the 2 hour time frame it would take me to get her back to sleep normally.
So, why did she go back to sleep so well?
WELL.......
A lot of other moms have been telling me not to change her diaper in the middle of the night unless it's pretty full or poop. I've always changed her diaper in the middle of the night. Not really thinking it may stimulate her too much, but I suppose it does. So I tried doing that last night. It may have worked? Or it may have been a freak of nature?
I find it kind of gross to not change her diaper if she wakes up, but she has slept through the night & I never woke her to change her. So, it's like the same thing, right? It's such a hard decision for me because I don't like the thought of her sleeping in pee all night, but if it helps us both get sleep I think I may just continue doing it....
Do you mommas change your babies diaper in the middle of the night all the time? Any insight would be great!

I cant believe she still was swaddled and didnt break out haha. I already told you what I do but i'll tell you again. When p wakes up I nurse her on one side, then change her diaper and nurse on the other side. I don't turn any lights on or talk to her. She doesn't get excited like she does during her daytime changes where she is kicking and rolling around. I think nursing her after I change her makes her sleepy again. we are up for like 30 minutes max. I lay her back down and she takes her paci and goes to sleep. Sometimes she talks and coos herself to sleep.
ReplyDeleteIf she starts sleeping through the night obviously I wont wake her up to change her but usually when she wakes up at night her diaper is really wet and I am not going to let her sit in it and risk her getting a rash or waking up because shes so uncomfortable. I wouldn't want to sleep in a cold, wet diaper! But that just my opinion.
Those last pictures are SO cute! Love her sweet smile!! : ) I have no advice for you since I'm not a mommy, but I would say that you should change her just so she doesn't get a diaper rash or something. Maybe change her before you nurse her? Then she will get sleepy again.
ReplyDeleteI commented before, but I'll chip in! I don't change V and she's never had a rash. We use a ton of diaper cream on that last diaper. When I did change her, she'd be up for hours, but now I can usually get her back down in 45 minutes or so. We still swaddle, so maybe I'd feel differently If I could change her quickly. At the end of the day, you've got to do what your comfortable with, and what works for you! Good luck!
